hi, I’m Olivia! your Scrappy Art School teacher
Get ready for your summer project!
Collect inspiration & create like an artist with a consistent, playful practice.
In Scrappy Art School, I’ll challenge you to loosen up, generate ideas, create a lot of work and set your artist heart on fire again.
We’ll do this through:
an ‘art sprint’ influenced by a pop culture classic
online live classes
creative co-working
a syllabus built from both my personal experience and my favourite artists' techniques
a dedicated group space to share your work and chat to others on the programme
hey, is this you?
I FEEL GUILTY BECAUSE I CALL MYSELF AN ‘ARTIST’ BUT I'VE NOT MADE ANYTHING IN MONTHS.
I'M FRUSTRATED BECAUSE I CAN'T COMMIT AND FINISH ANYTHING.
I TRY TO MAKE SOMETHING AND THEN GIVE UP 10 MINUTES LATER BECAUSE THE INSPIRATION JUST ISN'T COMING.
I SECOND-GUESS MY IDEAS BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO MAKE ANYTHING BAD.
MY INNER PERFECTIONIST RUNS THE SHOW.
I PROCRASTINATE MAKING ART BECAUSE I JUST FEEL LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IS MORE IMPORTANT.
I MISS THE CREATIVITY I HAD WHEN I WAS A KID.
Scrappy Art School is a 3-week online container of classes & creative co-working. Inside these 3 weeks, we’ll work on what I call an art sprint.
An art sprint is a dedicated period of time where you show up and create something every single day. It can be in any medium, but it’s all about creating consistency, building accountability, and banishing your artistic fight-flight-freeze with momentum.
What happens in Scrappy Art School?
01Live Classes & Creative Coworking
The heart of Scrappy Art School lives in the live classes and creative coworking sessions, which are a mixture of lecture, practical creative exercises (which are useful AND fun!), show & tell and art school study hall. Get inspired, share your ideas and synthesise new ways of working through live contact time.
0212 Day Art Sprint
Within the 3-week programme, we’ll do an art sprint: creating 12 pieces of art in 12 days, inspired by Pride & Prejudice. You’ll learn the magic of consistency, making bad things on purpose, and banish your artistic fight-flight-freeze.
03Online Chat & Syllabus
You’ll have a place to connect the classes and community outside of regular class times, with access to a Discord chat group and resources/replays from class. Get accountability and stay inspired with the extra support.
the magic sauce
Each term, Scrappy Art School uses a piece of pop culture as our central ‘text’ for projects and classes.
Through exercises, discussions and play, we'll use it as a gateway to a world of inspiration.
Term 2’s Pop Culture: Pride & Prejudice
Together we’ll notice the little & large details (a hand touch! a boiled potato!) and use them to fuel our art sprints.
You can make poems, songs, paintings… anything goes. This is an art class for any kind of artist.
If you're curious and want to try something different…. maybe this is the permission slip you've been waiting for.
What Happens in an Art Sprint?
An art sprint is a challenge — just enough of a push to get you thinking and creating differently. It takes a bit of dedication, but the rewards will stay with you long after those 12 days.

We’ll be watching Pride & Prejudice on our own time, and using what we collect from the film as inspiration for our art sprints. In this class I’ll show techniques for watching and taking notes on a movie like an artist. Learn how to quickly collect ideas, notice things you might have overlooked, and capture details from your own life to weave into your art sprint.
-
It’s time to start your art sprint! In this class we’ll discuss what makes a good art sprint, and how to plan yours. We’ll also do some warm up exercises to get your creative muscles used to making things quickly and imperfectly.
-
This is the first of two creative co-working sessions where we’ll work on our art sprints separately, together. Sessions start with a quick check-in and a fun warm-up exercise to get the inspiration flowing.
-
As we reach the mid-point of our art sprints, we’ll focus on how to keep going. We’ll review our progress, our processes, and come up with ways to innovate what we’re doing and make finishing irresistible.
-
The second of two creative co-working sessions where we work on our art sprints separately, together. Sessions start with a quick check-in and a fun warm-up exercise to get the inspiration flowing.
-
Now we’ve finished— what happens next? Our final class is focused on the ways we can share our art sprints, how we can incorporate what we’ve learnt into our everyday lives and how we continue to expand our capacity to create.
Olivia Rafferty
Whether it's writing 100 songs in 100 days, or collaborating on a collection of Craiglist-inspired songs, I am an artist who LOVES a kooky challenge.
But I'm also a creator who has learned about the magic of showing up and trying.
Over the years I've discovered how my practices of keeping notebooks, delving into visual worlds and staying curious has kept my creative spark alive and kicking.
Scrappy Art School is my excuse to create the art class I always wanted, combining what I've learned from songwriting, improv, poetry, and writer-teachers like Lynda Barry, and give artists the tools to create wildly and recommit to their practice.
Oh, and make art about Mr Darcy. Because I think it'll be really funny.
what people are saying
“Olivia is truly a creative’s creative. Her creativity knows no bounds and is sure to inspire and invigorate any artist struggling to find their voice.”
Cristina Hart
“Olivia is really good at coming up with structured ways to be creative, and a delight to collab with!”
Maggie MacDonald
“If you are in need of a proverbial kick in the butt, I'd recommend spending some time with Olivia.”
Phoebe Taylor

✶ Frequently asked questions ✶

I’ve crafted this course for artists of any medium.
That could mean you’re a writer, a poet, a painter, an illustrator, a songwriter, a ceramicist… the list goes on!
All you need to do is choose a medium which you’re able to make something with every day. It might even mean that you choose a new medium — one that you’re curious about.
This course is one big, juicy permission slip to turn up and TRY.
And it doesn’t matter if you suck at it. In fact, it’s encouraged!
-
People who want to create on their own timeline — we will be following. a structure over these two weeks.
People who are too proud or prejudiced to watch and make art about Pride & Prejudice ;)
-
I can’t show the whole film or give you a link to download it but you can access the movie on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and is available for purchase on Google Play for about £2.50.
You watch the movie in your own time, and we do creative exercises based on certain scenes in class. No need to memorise anything but note-taking and mark-making is important as you watch the movie.
I’ll outline “how to watch it” in our first class.
-
The classes and ‘making time’ sessions will be recorded and uploaded the following day, so you can follow along at your own time.
We will also have a class discord so you can chat and share your work there outside of class time.
-
Refunds are available up until 24 hrs before the first workshop date.
Refunds are not offered after the course begins.
-
This course is a commitment you’re making to yourself, so the only person who needs you to do the work is YOU!
The main piece of ‘homework’ (and the MEAT of Scrappy Art School is the 14 day art sprint. You’ll be expected to create 14 pieces of art over the course of 2 weeks (so one thing a day). The good news? IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE GOOD ART. Scrappy Art School is all about the magic of showing up.
We will also be creating additional work in class, quick, messy and easy, to get the juices flowing.
